We started reading Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.
  • We read a little background on "St-Ex" on the website: http://www.antoinedesaintexupery.com/ and looked at some quotations from the book.
  • We read chapter 1 together and discussed it briefly.
  • We developed our artistic abilities with a couple of drawing activities (# 6 top and #27 bottom of page) from the books "Take your Partner".
  • We started the questions for Ch. 1 from the "A la découverte" books - oral discussion in groups.
  • devoirs: re-read ch. 1, find a quotation that you find interesting and explain why (informal writing in French). If you wish, read more about the life of St.-Ex from the front of your book or on the web.

Good job on your test today - l'impératif et les pronoms. Good use of pronoun wheels. Started working on creating a conversation using this structure. Requirements: minimum 3 sentences per person in group, at least one of those must be l'impératif and 2 pronouns, try to use both affirmative and negative commands. Possible topics: Family Feud, making plans for a social evening, a driving lesson... Presentation due date: le mercredi 21 avril (memorized).

Did test on le subjonctif using the mind maps, then added more information to mind map if needed to make it an even better resource. Then, planned how to create "L'école du rêve" - divided into sections/topics and started making outlines. 15 sentences each, then will combine into a cohesive PowerPoint presentation. Draft due: le mercredi 21 avril then to computer lab to try to finish good copy for le vendredi 23 avril. Later: will add voice recording.

Also needs a name of the town/resort (in French) and could name the streets.

Continuing work on mind maps for le subjonctif and l'école du rêve. Added cahier pgs. 11 - 14 to help prepare for test Thurs. 15, but those are harder than the test. Just concentrate on uses and formation of the subjunctive. Review the handouts done so far.
L'école du rêve: probable format for written project (good copy will be due at end of next week) - will be - divide ideas up amongst all members of class and each will write a 15 sentence paragraph about one aspect of an ideal school. Presentation could be a PowerPoint and all group members will participate in editing and polishing draft work.

Did cahier pgs. 28 and 29. Looked at paintings by Paul Gaugin and started reading livre pgs 36 - 37 (just reading, not the "J'approfondis" activity). Continue reading and do questions in cahier pg. 30. Start reading livre pgs. 39-42 and do questions pg. 43 orally in your group. Do cahier pg. 31.

HWDSB Third Annual
Social Justice Fair

The Third Annual Social Justice Fair will host over 35 NGOs (non-governmental organization) and HWDSB students from all grade levels. Students will be able to participate in various workshops provided by several NGOs, network with other students, develop an awareness of both global and local concerns, view the two award winning films, listen to music provided by local talent, and celebrate the amazing things that our Board is involved with.

Here are some final instructions and information for our upcoming event:
The event takes place at Liuna Station on April 15th from 10:00– 2:00
An overview of the day will be posted just outside the Ballroom.

· Workshops will run in the morning
· Presentations, music, films and awards will run in the afternoon
· Students should bring some paper and a pen or pencil.

Lunch
· Students and teachers should bring a litterless lunch as there is no off site
travel permitted.
· Water, Juice and pop will be available for $2.00
· Students may want to organize a healthy picnic, using locally produced foods to share with their group.
· Please try and avoid plastic water bottle bottles

This is an event where some HWDSB students will showcase their Projects and all students will take part in Workshops. Model behavior is expected as Media and Special Guests from around the city will be in attendance throughout the day. It is important that all students be exceptional ambassadors for the HWDSB.

We are also asking schools to bring gently used clothing (preferably hip hop style, and toiletries to go to the “Walk-In Closet” program. There will be boxes provided for you.

Le subjonctif test will be Thurs Apr 15 and can use mind map.

Finished watching "Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis" and laughed a lot.

In French, we reviewed and practised how to use "vouloir" and "pouvoir" using the board, SmartBoard and handout cahier pg. 40 and created a reference sheet to use in class for the quiz tomorrow. We will also do a reading assessment tomorrow.

BTT: Thursday is a suggested journal/blog day. We continued work on researching the Francophone country chosen.

Please get your permission forms for the trip to the HWDSB Social Justice Fair next Thurs. April 15 at Liuna Station in downtown Hamilton signed and handed in. We are looking for one driver to help get us there in the morning and to help us return in the afternoon, so, parents, if you are able to help, please indicate that on the form.

We did a full 2 blackboard review lesson and note all about pronouns and spent some time improving the "roue des pronoms". We had an extra long class because of the OSSLT gr. 10 Literacy test, but we do enjoy French class together so much that time went by quickly. We were lucky enough to have a visitor - an exchange student from Montreux, Switzerland - who talked with us about the differences between Parkside and Canada and his home and school. He showed us his house and town and school using the internet and told us about the wonderful, fun, world-famous Montreux Jazz Festival. We also had time to watch some of the DVD "Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis"

3U: Make sure you finish cahier pgs. 23 - 26 for Friday (tomorrow).

4U: Work on 2 mind-maps: one for le subjonctif that you will be able to use for the summary test of the subjonctive next Thurs. April 15 and one to brainstorm about "l'école du rêve" - an ideal school. Possible topics/sub-topics are: le bâtiment, les salles de classes, le curriculum, l'équipment, le personnel (les étudiants, les professeurs etc.), ETC...

We listened to the 3 speeches of the 3 students representing us at the HWDSB Concours Oratoire and offered constructive feedback to help them with practise. They all did very well and didn't seem nervous at the competition. Naomi placed 3rd in her category and Leila and Kirstie received certificates of recognition.

We learned more about Mind-Mapping / Concept-Mapping as a technique to help students (and others) to learn, understand and consolidate information and knowledge. I will post further information on this in the next few days and some links of websites for computer-aided mapping.

3U used a simple mind-map to discuss "les avantages et les désavantages du marchandage" based on livre pg. 31 "J'approfondis".

4U will use mind-mapping to summarize "le subjonctif".

Started working on WebQuest in library on Francophone countries. Looked a at least 5 different countries where French is spoken and then chose one for further research. Next step - gather information (see assignment sheet) and then we will produce a tri-fold brochure.
