Practising French during the holidays

Students should spend some time (3 x 1/2 hour or more) during the holiday break to maintain or even increase their level of French.  There are only 3 weeks of classes in January when we return from the break before final examinations.  Students should find activities that are useful, interesting and fun if possible.  Some suggestions:
  • Catch up on late assignments.
  • binder/notebook
    • organize it better
    • re-do notes - maybe even type on computer or make concept maps
  • Review and practise
  • Watch DVDs in French or French television
  • Speak French whenever possible (i.e. while skiing in Québec!)

By the end of this course, students will:

  • write in a variety of forms, adjusting their style to suit the audience and the purpose
·         Format: 
    • à l’internet (blog) Mettez le blog privé, pas publique pour plus de sécurité. 
    • un document électronique (un document, pas dix)
    • papier/livret
    • Envoyez un courriel avec l’adresse pour le blog ou avec le document électronique attaché s.v.p.: bkukhtaj@hwdsb.on.ca
ü  On suggère que la première entrée soit une introduction de l’étudiant et ses objectifs personnels de son journal et que la dernière entrée soit une réflexion de l’expérience d’écrire un journal.
ü  Pour un blog, on peut créer une 11e entrée avec le titre « Mes meilleures 3 entrées ».
ü  Chaque semaine, il y aura un sujet suggéré pour aider les étudiants, mais ils sont toujours libres à choisir n’importe quel sujet. Cherchez www.ms-k-j.blogspot.com pour des entrées intitules “FIF 2D journal/blog” ou “journal topic ideas” pour autres idées des sujets.
ü  On peut inclure des images, des illustrations ou des photos si on le voudrait.

·         L’évaluation:
o   Application : Complète: _10_entrées x 10 – 12 phrases
OU
_20_ entrées x 5 – 6 phrases 
      • Les phrases sont en français.  Mettez la date et le sujet/thème/titre pour chaque entrée.
o   Communication : Indiquez les meilleures 3 entrées qui seront évaluées pour un niveau en communication (i.e. Est-ce qu’on peut bien  comprendre le message?)

o   Thinking/Inquiry: Quand vous choisissez les meilleures 3 entrées, faites attention au niveau de réflexion.  Le prof évaluera les entrées où vous pensez, où vous donnez votre opinion au lieu de seulement donner une liste d’activités à un niveau plus élevé.

Advice: Make it easy for your teacher to see what you have done so that it is easy to give you the highest mark possible.

  • Checked work assigned Fri: cahier pg 51.  Students who had completed that work made poems on posters.  Students who had not finished worked on completing that work.
  • Briefly introduced "le conditionnel":  how to say "would, could, should".
  • Formed groups to read livre pgs. 83 - 87 "Les astéroïdes" in Literature Circles, then orally answered livre pg.88 "As-tu compris?" and to work on cahier pgs. 95-96.  Students are asked to complete at least 1/2 of the activities on the 2 cahier pages.
  • Devoirs: 20 - 30 min. Re-read livre 83 - 87 and work on cahier 95-96.

  • Review and practise time for "le passé composé - avoir & être".  Summative test tomorrow.  Students were given a package of handouts and 9 other choices of activities and 45 min. of class time to help them prepare for tomorrow's test.  The activities included: SmartBoard, Concentration game, re-doing and checking previous handouts, cahier pages, tests, using "la Maison d'être" on window with cards with verbs, pink cards with correct and incorrect sentences and corrections, games using whiteboards, blackboards, sticks and dice, making posters or "cheat sheets".
  • Devoirs: Study for the test: "le passé composé - avoir & être".  Use some of the activities from class today.

Today, Ms. K-J was presenting at a Professional Development Day for teachers in York Catholic District School Board on "Differentiated Instruction: Practical Applications for Language Classes" so students worked independently and in small groups while supervised by a substitute teacher.

  • Students compiled the information from the questionnaires into a first draft of their annonces personnels.  They were to write 15 sentences for each monster (30 in total) including the monster's name, personality, physical appearance, interests, past, and what the monster was looking for. They were to include 10 adjectives, 5 verbs in the passe compose with avoir and 5 in the passé composé with être.
  • Devoirs: Students should complete the first draft for homework if it was not completed in class. Students MUST come to class with a complete first draft on Monday so that they may continue with the next step of the project: peer editing.

  • First half of period – worked quietly with partner or on own on creating their posters for “Une Personne que j’admire” on ledger paper provided.  They should have completed the planning work in their cahier (workbook) on page 33 and should have brought in some pictures (clip art, magazine or newspaper, drawings, etc.).  There is a sample poster in the textbook on page 29. These textbooks are on a shelf by the television and these do not leave the classroom. There is a box of old magazines in the classroom they can use for more illustrations if they need them.
  • Last half of period: DVD: Mr.Bean’s Holiday

  • Some students did handouts to learn les adjectifs irréguliers better and then they did a re-test. When done, they used the computers to improve their French using the website “BBC French”.
  • The rest of the students watched the DVD “Mission Possible 3” and did the Vrai/Faux handout as an assessment of their listening comprehension. They then worked on the handouts in the packageto practise the vocabulary of clothing.
  • Devoirs: Spend 10 - 15 minutes working on handout puzzles.

It's "Take our kids to work" day for all of our students in grade nine.  We hope that they are having valuable experiences in the workplace.

  • Some students participated in a small group tutorial with our teacher-candidate Ms. Webb to consolidate their knowledge of le passé composé et l'imparfait.
  • The rest of the class did a conversation activity from the books "Tu Parles Encore" then explored the "Cool French" section of the BBC French website.
  • Devoirs: Written portion of project "un incident dans mon passé" if not already done.  Spend 20 - 30 minutes on something French.

Take our kids to work day: Wed. Nov.3. A great opportunity for our grade 9 students to relate school life to the world of work and to think about their future career.

Award Assembly was this morning.  Congratulations to all the honour roll students and award winners.  Thank you to the audience who were attentive and appreciative.  Thank you to all staff and students who helped to organize and run such a great event.  Thank you to our guest presenters.  Mostly, thank you to all of our parents for raising such great kids.
