10 phrases - Comment achever une note de niveau 4

Use 10 different verbs - all conjugated and spelled correctly.
Use a variety of subjects (not just "je").
Some "avoir" and some "être" verbs.
Employ the negative in some sentences (ne...pas, ne...jamais, ne...plus, ne...rien, ne...personne)
Add details (adjectives, adverbs, etc) to sentences to make them interesting.

  • Le but d'apprentissage: Comment parler au passé.
  • Reviewed le passé composé through mini-lesson and very brief note.  Added "le négatif" and did a speaking activity - students talked in their groups about what they didn't do in the past week.  We also discussed the format for the test: part A: re-writing sentences from le présent to le passé composé and Part B: Students will be given a topic and will write 10 sentences - au passé composé.   We discussed and made a note of what to do to acheive a level 4 mark on that section.  See blog posting "10 phrases - Comment achever une note de niveau 4".
  • Rest of class: group and individual review and study to prepare for tomorrow's test.  Many activities were provided and students chose the activities that best suited their learning style.  The 12 handouts were checked for completion.
  • Devoirs: le passé composé - test tomorrow.

Ms. K-J was at an in-service work session today so students worked with a substitute teacher.  Students and parents need to be aware that work is provided for students when the teacher is absent and that they are expected to attend class and do their work as usual.  At any time that a student is absent for any reason, they are still expected to complete the assigned work.

  • The period 4 class had the opportunity to attend the Westdale Drama presentation: Elephants' Graveyard.  Most students went to the play and a few stayed in the classroom.  All students are still expected to complete the 12 handouts for le passé composé for Wed. Mar 30.

  •  handout practise: le passé composé. Handout is 4 pages (2 pgs. back to back). Answer keys for most of the pages are posted on the back bulletin board as well as answer keys for Monday’s and yesterday’s homework sheets.   Test is Thurs. March 31 so students are expected to have all sheets (all 3 pkgs) finished for Wed March 30.
  • Continued work on organizing notes and finishing questions Notre Dame de Paris. Should be working on chapter 6 in groups or by self. Students are expected to read the chapter then answer questions # 1 – 3. If done, can start chapter 7.
  • Devoirs: None assigned for the weekend, but should spend time on French if haven’t worked effectively in class this week.

    • Success criteria for questions: They can be done in point form and not all questions need to be answered. I will be assessing level of comprehension of the story. Students are allowed to help each other, but each student will be handing in the 3 pages of questions.
  • Devoirs: None assigned except that may need to finish La Parure questions if didn’t work effectively enough in class and in homework this week.

Ms. K-J will not be at school this week but has left lots of work for the students to do with well-qualified substitute teachers.  The expectation is that the students will be able to work on their own, with their groups and with the guidance of the substitute teacher to take responsibility for their learning.  There is no homework assigned for the March Break provided students work well enough during the week and for 20 - 30 minutes each evening Mon - Thurs to complete the work assigned.

  • Students will be reading several chapters of Notre Dame de Paris and supplementary articles about Paris included in the book.  They are expected to take notes using the literature circle pages provided and to answer questions #1, 2 and 3 for each chapter.
  • Test: les verbes au present on Thurs. March 10 (originally scheduled for Wed. March 9).  We have been reviewing and practising these verbs in different formats for a few weeks now.  Students should complete the 9 page handout package and check them using the answer keys posted at the back of the classroom as well as other practise and studying to be well prepared for the test.

  •  Students will be reading "La Parure" using literature circles in groups.   They are expected to work together to help each other understand the story, to take notes and to answer the questions on the new handout provided (don't worry about the questions previously given).  There is also an activity outlined on a handout that they can begin to work on and which we will continue after the break.
